Evaluation
From a lighting designers perspective, I think that the show was an overall success. The plan I had made fit well with each part of the show, whether that be the rock show scenes or the dramatic scenes that was needed at that point. Some things that could be improved upon next time would include :
- Ideas - when I was told I would be the lighting designer for this show, I asked if there was any important aspects that I would need to include in my plan. I was told there wasn't, so I carried on with what I wanted to have in the show. During the week of rigging and focusing, I was told that centre stage spots upstage and downstage would be needed so I then have to change my plan so I could fit that in as I had already used all the profiles.
- Team - During the rigging, focusing and plotting process, the team worked really well together. Everything that was asked to be done by them was done quickly and easily. However, I would in the future want to have a team brief before starting any of these to make sure everyone knew what they were doing as a lot of questions were asked on what they would need to do next so I should have either made a list of everything that needed to be done which once done could be crossed off, or just told everyone so everyone individually knew what to do.
Overall, the show, with regards to lighting, was a success as all the lights fit what was needed and the operators on the nights knew what they were doing so that ran smoothly.

Your Role In Action - 2D Lighting Design
This is the 2D design I produced from the first manual drawing. The plan was produced using the LX Free Java software that has the lighting symbols to add to the plan so it is easy to see what was wanted by the designer if they are not there for the rigging process. The number for the dimmer and channel will be at the back of these lights so that the rigger knows where to plug the light into. On the front of the light there will be the code for the colour that is wanted for the light, for example 079 would be a blue, and o/w would be open white (no gel). During the rigging session I made some changes to where the lantern would be placed and the where it would be plugged into. I also made notes on colours that hadn't yet been put in cause they were ordered but had not yet arrived.
Before the plotting sessions I updated the LX plan to make it easier to see what light is what when making a state.
I also made groups in the desk to make it quicker to make the states
Group 1 - Backlight
Group 2 - General Wash US
Group 3 - General Wash CS
Group 4 - General Wash DS
Group 5 - All General Wash
Group 6 - Audience Lights
Group 7 - All Side Lights
Group 8 - Under the stage lights
Group 9 - Birdies
Your Role In Action - Manual Design
This is the lantern stock owned by Priestley College plus the moving heads that we would be hiring for We Will Rock You. My annotation shows that I have been working out how many lights we have that we can use.
This is my original first manual drawing of the lighting plan for We Will Rock You.
The point of this is so that the designer can easily make a 1st plan of what they imagine they want the show to look like. It is usually done as a manual drawing so that it is easy to rub out and re-do. We have also done a key for the lights as so if anyone needs to look at it and doesnt understand then it is easy to find out what is happening within the plan.
This plan was more difficult than past show I have been involved in as the truss has been put around the stage which obstructs the light from getting to the back when put at the front. This meant that the general wash needed to be at a steeper angle to be lit and an extra line of general wash would need to be used.

Initial Ideas and Planning - Shedule Times
Scheduled Times
- My rough first draft of the lighting plan to be finished by the 24th April.
- Final Draft of my lighting plan to be finished 1st May.
- Rigging session 6th May.
- Focusing session 7th May.
- Plotting session 9th May.
- Technical rehearsal 10th May.
- Dress rehearsal 13th May.
- 2nd dress rehearsal 14th May.
- Opening night 14th May.
- Get out 17th May.
These scheduled times are important to keep to as if they are not kept then it will run over to the next day, which as you can see from the times above there is something on a few of those days, like if the plotting session doesn't go to plan it would run on to the technical rehearsal which would then run into the dress rehearsal then opening night is the next day.
